A continuous cantilever system with the stopper was designed as an experimental device. The effect of the stopper was analyzed to present the jumping, multi-steady-state properties as well as other nonlinear phenomena. Then, the nonlinear amplitude-frequency response of the cantilever beam was studied for different values of width and height of the stopper, and the general rules of the contact between the cantilever beam and the stopper were revealed. It is found that the response of the cantilever system is from cycle to chaos and then to jump, which is explained by the analysis of time record and frequency spectrum. The experimental results adequately show the fact that there exist rich nonlinear phenomena in non-smooth system.
